Essential Domain Name Security
Registry Lock for Preventing Domain Name Hijacking
Registry Lock is one of the most effective safeguards against domain name hijacking. By placing a high-security lock at the registry level, it prevents unauthorized changes to critical domain settings.

Registry Lock Critical for domain security
The registry lock is an authentication process offered by the domain Registry that blocks unauthorized DNS server modifications, contact modifications, transfers, and updates by cybercriminals. It is a critical element to Domain Name Management security.

Key Threat Domain Hijacking
Domain-name hijacking is when an outside agent gains unauthorsed control over a registered domain through various illegal means. They can then change DNS records or even attempt to transfer the domain name to their environment. Companies can prevent domain name hijacking with strong cyber security processes, such as multifactor authentication, and the ultimate prevention tool – domain name registry lock.

Google Vietnam (2015) Google’s search engine in Vietnam was briefly hijacked, redirecting users to a site promoting cyberattack tools.

Twitter (2013) was hijacked and briefly redirected causing significant disruption to the platforms

Malaysia Airlines (2015) Malaysia Airlines had its website hijacked by a group that appeared to be trying to settle a score with a U.S. videogame company.

New York Times (2013).A politically motivated group hijacked the domain of The New York Times, redirecting its website to a server under their control.
Malaysia Airlines Hijacked
In January 2015, Malaysia Airlines fell victim to a DNS hijacking attack carried out by the hacker group Lizard Squad, operating under the banner of the Cyber Caliphate. Instead of breaching the airline’s internal systems, the attackers altered the domain’s DNS settings at the registrar level, redirecting visitors to defaced web pages.

DNS-level attacks can bypass internal network security – Compromising a domain’s DNS settings allows attackers to redirect traffic without accessing the target’s infrastructure

Registry Lock could have prevented the attack: Out-of-band approval for DNS changes, Registry Lock would have blocked the unauthorized changes entirely.

Why Registry Lock provides the highest level of security
A registry lock provides the highest level of protection for a domain name and gives you the added safety that your critical domains are safeguarded against hackers and hijacking. This security mechanism is executed through a secure Registry to Registrar protocol that can not be compromised by outside parties:
