Brandsec is an Australian-owned and operated business, with its team based locally and deeply embedded in the Australian digital and domain landscape. This local presence headed by Joe Thymian and supported by Grant McMenemie ensures a strong understanding of regional market dynamics, regulatory considerations, and the specific needs of Australian organisations. Being supported and operated within Australia also enables more responsive communication, aligned time zones, and a service model tailored to local businesses. The result is a more accountable, accessible, and context-aware approach to domain acquisition and brand protection for Australian enterprises.
Over the past few months, we’ve been seeing some really strong momentum in our domain acquisition work.
Of the domains we have successfully acquired, approximately 50% have been .com domains, highlighting their continued importance as the most recognised and sought-after extension globally. These domains are notoriously hard to acquire which is why our vast acquisition network really comes in handy. The remaining acquisitions have been a mix of .com.au and various country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs), reflecting the need for strong regional brand presence. We have also seen a notable increase in demand for .io and .ai domains, driven by the growth of technology, SaaS, and AI-focused businesses. While .com remains the preferred choice for many organisations, businesses are increasingly pursuing domain extensions that align with their industry and brand strategy.
Between February and the end of May 2026 we completed around 23 successful acquisitions averaging roughly a new successful acquisition every 5 days. That consistency is something we’re genuinely proud of.
One of the most interesting areas we’re now looking to measure more clearly is our overall success rate across opportunities, not just what we’ve secured for our clients, but the total volume we’ve gone after. We are currently sitting at a conversion rate of 23 successful acquisitions from 27 opportunities which reflects an 85%+ success rate, highlighting the effectiveness of our approach.
A few key reasons behind this performance:
1. Pre-engagement reports that provide realistic valuation ranges
Before any acquisition activity begins, a comprehensive pre-engagement report is prepared to assess the domain’s likely market value, ownership status, historical sales data, and acquisition complexity. This provides a realistic valuation range based on market evidence and industry expertise, allowing clients to make informed decisions before committing resources.
2. Reduced risk of overpricing or underpricing expectations
Accurate valuation guidance helps prevent costly mistakes. Overestimating a domain’s value can lead to unnecessary expenditure, while undervaluing it can result in missed opportunities or failed negotiations. By establishing realistic expectations from the outset, clients are better positioned to secure domains at fair market value.
3. Strong global relationships with registries, registrars, and brokers
Years of industry experience have enabled the development of trusted relationships across the global domain ecosystem. These connections often provide valuable insight into domain ownership structures, market conditions, and acquisition opportunities that may not be publicly available, helping to facilitate smoother transactions.
4. Deep access to a wide industry network
Beyond registries and registrars, access to an extensive network of domain investors, portfolio owners, brokers, and industry professionals increases the likelihood of identifying and reaching decision-makers. This can be particularly valuable when pursuing high-value domains where ownership information is limited or difficult to obtain.
5. Experienced negotiation capability to secure optimal outcomes
Domain acquisitions often require specialised negotiation skills. Experienced negotiators understand how to approach owners, manage expectations, maintain confidentiality, and navigate complex discussions. This helps maximise the likelihood of a successful acquisition while working to achieve the most favourable commercial outcome possible.
6. A disciplined, data-led acquisition process
Every acquisition follows a structured methodology designed to minimise risk and improve outcomes. Decisions are guided by market data, ownership research, valuation analysis, and negotiation strategy rather than assumptions or emotion. This disciplined approach provides transparency throughout the process and helps ensure acquisitions are completed efficiently and effectively.
Taken together, these capabilities provide a structured and low-risk approach to domain acquisition, combining accurate market insight, strong industry access, and disciplined execution to consistently deliver optimal outcomes.
